00100 PREFACE
00200 Something "artificial" is manmade. Someone "paranoid"
00300	believes others have malevolent intentions towards him. Artificial
00400	paranoia represents an attempt to computer simulate naturally
00500	occurring paranoia.
00600 A computer simulation of paranoid processes involves the
00700	construction and testing of a high-complexity symbolic model. To
00800	fathom such a model and its functions, it is first necessary to
00900	understand the perspectives of symbol processing and computer
01000	simulation. I shall try to present some background information
01100	sufficient to orient a reader unfamiliar with these perspectives.
01200 I am indebted to co-workers who collaborated with me in
01300	constructing and testing the model. Sylvia Weber Russell wrote the
01400	original version of the program. Franklin Dennis Hilf was primarily
01500	responsible for the validation studies. Helena Kraemer assisted in
01600	the design of the experiments and in carrying out the statistical
01700	methods used.
01800 Also I am grateful to Bruce Anderson, Bruce Buchanan,
01900	Franklin Dennis Hilf, Roger C. Parkison, Charles J. Rieger III and
02000	Yorick Wilks for their comments on the entire manuscript and to
02100	Margaret A. Boden, Horace Enea and Abraham Kaplan for suggestions
02200	regarding specific chapters. Because i made them, I bear full
02300	responsibility for the errors.
02400 This research was supported by Grant PHS MH 06645-12 from the
02500	National Institute of Mental Health and by (in part) Research
02600	Scientist Award (No.1-K05-K14,433) from the National Institute of
02700	Mental Health.
